Robot Heart

FF02

Further Future, a festival organized by Robot Heart, an offspring of a well-known camp at Burning Man, held their second annual recurrence of the festival last week at the Moapa River Reservation, outside of Las Vegas Nevada. The festival lineup included artists such as, Lee Burridge, Yokoo, Nicolas Jaar, Frank & Tony, Dixon and more. The weekend was filled with weather obstacles including, thunder, rain, storms, lightning, high winds, and hail. Festivalgoers chose interesting ways to show their creativity, wearing sparkly hoods, helmets, steampunk clothing, goggles, latex, futuristic sunglasses, hand fans, parasols, and more. Scattered across the playa were wellness workshops, art and tech fixtures, a spa, yoga classes, meditation areas and vendors offering food and drink options. One of the common complaints about the vendor options was that there were not enough vegetarian and vegan options.

The three-day event has reaped a lot of negative media attention for its privileged manifestation and lineup of technology speakers. The Guardian ran an article on Further Future in which one guest referred to it as “The Burning Man for the 1%”. Tickets for Further Future started at $350 and various upscale, luxury, camping/glamping options were available for purchase. When festival attendees arrived on Friday, stages and platforms were still being built. Many have voiced their concerns about Further Future and only time will tell whether it has what it takes to become a fully polished and organized festival. Like any brand new large-scale event, there are always going to be trials, oversights, and things to be learned and discovered through the process. Thankfully, the awesome line up of artists, and marvelous guests made for a remarkable weekend of firsts for many individuals. As Lee Burridge stated, “It was a super tough weekend due to desert rains but the Sunday morning sunrise turned everything around.”

Overall, for those who attended, Further Future was a collection of mixed views and feedback, but the future is bright and we look forward to seeing what it will bring next year.
