On Sunday, July 24th, Flash Nightclub DC teamed up with party collective, Prescription, to present an outdoor, mid-summer, underground day festival in DC. “The Sidewalk Ends” was the first of its kind for the city and was held in an outdoor area near Union Market. The open layout, with the vivid Washington DC sky overhead, provided a great background to the booming techno and house music. Despite challenges that plague every festival in the DMV, “The Sidewalk Ends” delivered an extensive variation of talents that ranged from house, techno, and other appropriate dark beats. Some of the talent in the lineup included local artists such as Lisa Frank, Hot Coffee, and Benoit. Camea (Germany) and Catz N Dogz (Poland) travelled to make this event extra special and memorable.
Even though this was an entirely new event, it was extremely well organized and planned. The large venue was appropriately staffed, artists were timely, and drink lines were short and efficient. Extra considerations were made for the sweltering heat that day: free water stations were accessible, large fans were on every corner of the pavement, and smiling bartenders were even handing out free, ice-cold Gatorade.
In the ever-evolving realm of day parties and festivals, it can be challenging to differentiate one experience from another. As the venues and lineups become gradually redundant, and lines between events become blurred, promoters have to attempt to isolate themselves and create events that are unique and new. “Sidewalk Ends” succeeded in this endeavor. We hope that Flash DC will continue these events and keep pushing the underground music envelope for Washington D.C.
